Eden Eternal MMO Review

Developed by X-Legend and released in June of 2011, Eden Eternal is an anime-styled MMORPG set in a fantasy world.  With a spirit of mixing traditional and unique systems, Eden Eternal is a conglomeration of features that create an experience for players that envelope them in a delicately colored anime-styled world, filled with characters, creatures, and NPCs  that invoke a more child-like experience. A true highlight within Eden Eternal is how its class and race system works together. Though loosely bound together, both choices share synergy represented by racial and class traits.

Published by Aeria Games, the world within Eden Eternal is filled with countless hours of gameplay. Though most of the game is seen as a grind-fest, particularly after level 50, there are activities for players to partake in within the game. These options both encompass PvP, such as the Battlefield, Territory War, and duels as it pertains to PvP; within PvE which include Quests, Dungeons, and GM-held events.

Gameplay and Graphics

It is a class system which is said to be one of the best class systems in the entire Free to Play MMORPG market because of the freedom it gives players. With a total of 18, classes within Eden Eternal fall into one of 5 Class Branches. These branches are Defense, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS, Support, and Magic DPS. Upon creation, players are given a choice of being a Warrior (a Defense class) or Magician (a Magic DPS class), with the other classes being able to be unlocked through leveling up certain a class or combination of classes to a certain required level. In addition to choosing their beginning class, players much choose their race (which is a more important choice than in most modern F2P MMORPGs, as it’s not only a character background or cosmetic choice); as well a Heroic Trait.

There are a total of 8 heroic traits, each having a unique name and granting a specific stat boost which further defines and benefits a player’s character class choice. It is to be noted that in order to change this heroic trait choice, players must purchase and redeem a Heroic Trait Transformation which is purchased in Eden Eternal’s Item Mall.

Though offering a bit of variation, Eden Eternal’s PvE gameplay mainly is said to be very grindy, consisting of quests which come in 1 of 2 categories; Main/Story or Repeatable. To break the monotony, players can also team together and create unique party combinations in order to tackle dungeons and the challenges they present to players. It is for this that PvE in Eden Eternal has often been considered slightly unique, despite the severe lack of alternate options.

Eden Eternal’s PvP scene consists of the Arena system, Territory War (Guild vs Guild), and dueling. Taking a different approach with its Arena system, within Eden Eternal, the Arena is only open 2-3 times a day, each session lasting approximately 2 hours. For the Arena, players must be level 30+ and can access the arena with the simple press of a button located on the mini-map. There are two versions of the arena; the 3 vs 3 Arena and the Monster Arena.

In the 3 vs 3 Arena, players are randomly put into two teams of 3 and are pitted against each other. These teams are completely random and cannot be pre-formed. In addition, neither team is based on a level tier, such as level 30-39, 40-49, etc. Instead, any player above level 30 can be placed on either team, therefore essentially weakening/crippling their team, if the opposing team consisted of all max level characters.  In the Monster Arena, players are randomly put into 2 teams of three. However, the player’s character level is of no importance as players are randomly set as a certain monster, and a team may consist of two or more of the same monster.

Currency and the Cash Shop

Eden Eternal offers a plethora of cash shop choices and micro-transaction opportunities, such as the Loot Wheel, Weekend Sales, Weekly Dollar Deals, Free Rewards, Tiered Spender events, and many others. It is for the game’s micro-transactions and the cash shop choices, such as mounts, cosmetic outfits, dyes, item packages, and many other offers that have created a stigma of Eden Eternal to be a cash shop oriented game.

Further fueling this stigma is Aeria Games’ push for players to participate in the purchase of items from Eden Eternal’s Item Mall via the use of Limited-Time Sales the Tiered Spender system. In each system, players are given higher discounts or even bonus rewards/gifts for having spent a certain amount of AP (Aeria Points, Aeria Game’s cash shop currency). It is for this that many players have felt tricked or enticed to purchase from Eden Eternal’s cash shop, benefiting from the convenience or cosmetic choices these systems offer.

  1. I love this games graphics (so cute!), and the costumes are amazing, but got damn, during my time playing this I spent sooo much money on costumes and useless things D= If you can manage to control yourself (like I did not!) with the cash shop costumes and wheels of fortune type things (that actually do let you win every now and then unlike some games), the game is pretty fun. Crafting can be a real pain and sadly, to be successful at higher levels of crafting it does cost real money to buy special items for it, however, if you have a ton of in game gold you might be lucky and grab the items on the auction house.

I recommend this game to anyone who just wants to play around, solo or with a couple friends.
